Most timber hulls that “leak along the seams” are really failing at the fastenings. As fastenings waste, planks work against their frames; working planks destroy caulking; the seam leaks. Re-caulking treats the symptom and buys perhaps a season. Renewing fastenings by zone treats the cause.
How fastenings fail in the tropics
Warm salt water accelerates every corrosion process. Add a hull that spends its life wet, dissimilar metals in close proximity, and timbers that can be chemically aggressive to some alloys, and fastenings waste faster here than in temperate service. The wastage is rarely uniform: it concentrates where water sits, where oxygen is limited, and where two different metals are electrically connected through wet timber.
The result is a pattern rather than a scatter — a zone of the hull where fastenings are going, surrounded by zones where they are still sound. Recognising the pattern is the whole diagnostic task.
Nail sickness
Where a ferrous fastening corrodes inside timber, the corrosion products migrate into the surrounding wood and degrade it. The timber blackens and softens in a halo around the fastening, and it loses the ability to hold any replacement fastening in the same hole. This is why a hull can have sound-looking planking that will nonetheless not accept new fastenings without local repair — and why a fastening survey has to assess the wood as well as the metal.
The small sample that saves a fortune
Withdrawing a handful of fastenings from representative zones costs very little and answers the most consequential question about an older hull. Buyers who skip it are, in effect, purchasing an unopened envelope.

Metal choice, and why mixing is dangerous
Different metals in electrical contact through salt-wet timber form a cell, and the less noble one corrodes preferentially. A hull refastened piecemeal over decades, with whatever was available at the time, can contain several different fastening materials in the same plank run — a configuration that guarantees accelerated local corrosion. Part of the value of a zonal renewal is that it restores consistency: one specified material, correctly matched to the timber species, throughout the zone.

Treenails and traditional practice
Wooden fastenings have genuine engineering advantages in the right application: they cannot corrode, they swell with the surrounding timber, and they do not set up a galvanic cell. They require accurate holes, appropriate hardwood stock and skilled fitting, and they are not a like-for-like replacement for through-bolts in areas carrying concentrated load. Where a hull was originally fastened this way, continuing the practice in repair is usually the right decision — provided the work is done by people who do it regularly rather than as an experiment.

Sequencing with everything else
Refastening must precede caulking, and both must precede coating. Every so often a vessel arrives having been caulked and painted by a previous yard, with the fastening problem untouched underneath. The new work has to come off to reach the fastenings, and the owner pays twice.
