Sheathing is a life-extender on a sound hull and an accelerant on a suspect one. The deciding question is never cost or convenience — it is whether the timber underneath is dry, sound and properly fastened. If that cannot be established, the correct sequence is open, dry, verify, repair, and only then consider sheathing.
What sheathing is for
A sheathing is a continuous protective layer bonded to the outside of the planking. Its purposes are to exclude marine borers, to protect the timber and seams from abrasion and water, and to provide a stable, continuous surface for antifouling. In tropical waters, where borer activity is aggressive and growth is year-round, those are substantial benefits.
The cost is that the hull can no longer dry outward through its planking. Everything therefore depends on the moisture state of the timber at the moment it is sealed.
The failure mode nobody sees coming
Consider a hull with moderate moisture in the planking, some tired fastenings and a couple of areas of early decay — a completely ordinary older vessel. Sheathe it and the surface becomes immaculate. Underneath, the moisture that used to migrate outward is now trapped against the wood; the early decay has ideal conditions and no oxygen limitation to slow it; and the fastening corrosion continues unobserved. Three or four years later the sheathing is lifted and the planking beneath is far worse than when the work was done.
Sheathing is not a repair
It is occasionally proposed as a way of dealing with seams that will not hold caulking. It is not. Seams that will not hold caulking indicate worn plank edges or fastening problems, and covering them changes nothing except how long it takes to find out.
Preconditions worth insisting on

Where sheathing genuinely earns its place
On a well-fastened hull in good structural order, especially one that will spend long periods in warm water with limited haul-out opportunities, sheathing can add years of service and simplify each subsequent maintenance cycle. Antifouling on timber and sheathed hulls
Compatibility first
The antifouling must suit what is beneath it — bare timber, a sheathing, or an existing coating system. Incompatible layers lift, and lifting coatings on a wooden hull expose timber selectively.
Preparation decides adhesion
Most antifouling failure is preparation failure. Contaminated, damp or poorly keyed surfaces produce coatings that release in sheets within a season.
Usage pattern matters
A vessel that moves regularly fouls differently from one that sits at anchor for weeks. The system should be chosen for the actual operating profile.
Plan the interval
Tropical growth rates make the antifouling interval a scheduling input for the whole maintenance cycle, not an afterthought at haul-out.
Waterline, boot-top and the details that fail first
Coating failures on timber hulls concentrate at boundaries: the waterline, around skin fittings, at the transom, at the stem, and wherever a repair meets original planking. These are the areas with the most movement, the most exposure and the most edges. They deserve extra preparation time and, on any hull carrying a sheathing, careful detailing where the sheathing terminates.
Deciding honestly
Owners often ask for a recommendation before the hull has been opened, which is the one point at which no honest recommendation is available. The desk’s position is consistent: establish the condition first through survey and inspection, complete structural work, then choose a protection strategy suited to the vessel’s real state and real use. A sheathing decision taken in that order is a good investment. Taken in the other order it is a wager on what is under the paint.
Maintaining a sheathed hull
A sheathing changes the maintenance regime rather than removing it. Inspection shifts from looking at timber to looking at the integrity of the covering: edges, terminations, the areas around skin fittings, and any place where the hull has taken a knock. Damage that would be trivial on bare planking is significant here, because a breach admits water to timber that can no longer dry outward.
Repairs to a sheathing should therefore be treated with urgency and done properly — cut back to sound material, dry the substrate, and re-bond — rather than patched over. Owners who adopt that discipline get the service life the system promises.
